A Startup Disrupting Data in Conversation with Jobbio

We met Phil Harvey, the Chief Technology Officer at DataShaka, who gave us insights into the startup which has an ambitious plan of disrupting data industry.

You are on the mission of making data and “less hard” as you call it. When did you realise things needed to be shaken up?

I believe that data is just too hard. The amazing resource available to everyone in data is being wasted. Too much time is spent fighting data and data systems. It leaves business and technologists frustrated and disheartened. Everyone should be able to use data to understand and improve their business. Data needs to be easier. We are born out of Digital Planning and Buying in online media, but can see that data is just too hard in every industry.

What do you think makes a good data-driven project?

One that works and does not cause a war between business and technology.

How do you ensure every member of the team is heard?

The simple answer is that it’s a mindset built in everyone who works at Datashaka. Not listening and disrespecting other members of the team is not tolerated. This means everyone is heard. We organise premortem and postmortem, planning and strategy discussions where everyone has a chance to challenge the status quo.

You are currently hiring .NET software engineer. Why should the perfect candidate apply to join DataShaka?

We are a technology company working on real technology. We think we can revolutionise the world of data analytics by building a hosted time-series database and providing a simple query language that makes sense to data-oriented professionals. This is an exciting challenge for most software engineers, the opportunity to create something from the ground and not only “plumb” pieces of software together.

Who is that perfect candidate?

Someone who shares our values and ‘why’ we do this. They have to bring the skills and the spirit to join us on our mission. Someone who thinks creating a database is a fun way to spend their time. Someone who can run with an idea and make it happen but will also take a step back with the team and discuss the ‘whys’ and ‘hows’. Someone who loves to learn new tricks, new ways of working.

How do you find presenting DataShaka and your current vacant position on Jobbio?

The team at Jobbio has been extremely helpful. It’s exciting to be working with you.

What is the “data joke” we could hear only in your office?

“Let’s not worry about how we get the data, that is the easy part.”

What’s the future of data and more precisely data-driven projects?

More and more data from more and more sources. Overall … MORE!
