Dublin is ahead of New York, Sydney and London in terms of attracting, retaining and growing talent according to a recent report. The Global Cities Talent Competitiveness Index (GCTCI) examined 46 cities, comparing quality of life, education, R&D investment and infrastructure to see Dublin claim number 10 in the rankings.
While previous reports focused on countries only, this year’s report recognised the power of specific cities in attracting top Talent. The GCTCI was produced by INSEAD, HR services firm Adecco and the Human Capital Leadership Institute. Copenhagen topped the list, followed by Zurich, Helsinki and San Francisco.

The smaller cities appear to be leading the charge with all but 4 of the top ten having an average population of 400,000 or below. The Talent competitiveness of cities was measured across 19 variables, however Bruno Lanvin, Executive Director of Global Indices at INSEAD said the top ten:
“Are cities where talents can find excellent career opportunities, good connectivity (broadband and transport) and a high quality of life for themselves and their families.”

Cardiff narrowly missed out on the top 10, placing at number 11. Followed by Sydney, Berlin, New York, Vienna and London. The Global Talent Competitiveness Index (GTCI) also ranked the top 10 countries, with four Nordic countries featuring (Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden).

The theme of this year’s report is around technological advances and talent acquisition and that while advanced tech is making some jobs obsolete through automation, it is also creating more employment opportunities. To reap the benefits of an evolving careers landscape, employees must commit to constant learning and development and be prepared to take on a multitude of jobs in a career span.
