A Day In The Life Of Hire Space Head of promotions Tiernan Mines

What do you do, and how did you get here?

I head up Hire Space‘s Promotions Team. My team are responsible for providing venues and suppliers on Hire Space with bespoke marketing campaigns to help boost their exposure on our website and in the events industry in general. I came to Hire Space through a pretty unconventional route. My background is in property and surveying. I left Tesco’s UK Business Strategy Team to start my own website startup – a peer-to-peer marketplace for university students. After a steep learning curve of launching and running the website, I found a rapidly growing Hire Space.

How do you spend your day?

Meeting and speaking to venues and suppliers about their inclusion in our marketing; reporting to the founders on team performance; giving advice for the business going forward and speaking to potential new partners for Hire Space.

As well as that, I need to support my team any way I can to make sure they’re equipped to do their job and more importantly, make sure they’re happy.

What’s the best part of your job?

It’s a fantastically entrepreneurial environment. Everyone has an insane work ethic. The growth rate of my team and Hire Space is directly proportional to the effort we put in.  Every decision made has an immediately visible result.

What’s the hardest part of your job?

Prioritisation. It would be very easy as part of a startup to try EVERY new and exciting idea that comes about. Knowing where and when to prioritise is challenging, but is key in this role.

What traits are ‘must haves’ to do your job well?

You need to be decisive, level headed, forward-thinking and entrepreneurial (basically willing to hustle, hustle, hustle).

Any advice for people applying for a job like yours?

Two pieces of advice that have always stayed with me and helped in this role more than any:
1. What’s the worst that can happen?
2. Anything is possible.

What’s your ultimate goal in your career?

To build a company/companies so successful that they allow me the freedom to make the lives of others better on a global scale. A quote that drives my ultimate goal:

“If you’re not making someone else’s life better, then you’re wasting your time. Your life will become better by making other lives better.”

How do you unwind after work?

I’m a big sports fan, so either watching or playing sports. Mainly football during the week or NHL games on catch up. (Chelsea and Montreal Canadiens fan, if you’re wondering).

Tell us one quirky thing nobody would know about you.

At work, I am referred to as “Uncle T”.
