Through advances in tech, changes in employee priorities and expanding global markets, remote working has become increasingly popular. It allows employees the freedom and flexibility to pursue multiple projects and it allows employers to source a wider pool of talent. However, not everyone is cut out for this style of work. Here’s what you need to be an effective remote worker.
Be an excellent communicator
As you won’t physically be around your colleagues and managers, it’s important that you can communicate well over phone, text, video call and email. This means being aware of your tone so that you’re responding appropriately and respectfully to messages. It also means being highly responsive and easy to get in touch with throughout the day. Just because you’re not in the office doesn’t mean you can make less effort to collaborate.
Prioritise effectively
To be a good remote worker you need to be highly organised and have an excellent grasp on how to prioritise your tasks. The ability to limit distractions and focus your concentration is a big asset. It’s crucial that you understand what takes precedence in your schedule and that you’re able to differentiate the important from the urgent.
Be self-motivated
You need to be a self-starter who can work independently without frequent support from a manager. You need to show initiative and be confident in your own decision making. You also need the discipline and drive to work when you’re not being monitored by your superiors.
Take responsibility
Set deadlines and stick to them. Own your workload and take responsibility for any shortcomings. Holding yourself accountable for your performance shows your manager that you can be trusted to work autonomously.
Be tech savvy
You need to have a good handle on communication technology to keep in contact with your colleagues and update them on your progress. Whether you’re using Trello, Google Hangouts or Slack you need to be somewhat savvy on mobile and digital.
