Creating the Right Culture for Your Company

Company culture is often misinterpreted as exposed brick offices, free coffee and vibrant alternative seating. And while we’re unlikely to refuse a shiny perk now and then, the truth is that authentic culture runs much deeper.

“It’s not bean bags, it’s not free food, it’s not free coffee,” says David Barker on stage at Expand London. Culture, according to David, comes from a shared purpose and mission.

“Give clarity and purpose and focus and mission to be able to deliver against – that is so much more powerful than anything you can offer in an office.”

For Riot Games, their shared mission revolves around the desire to be the most player focused company in the world. The mission, says David, is obsessive, compulsive and aspirational. It’s so central to the company’s ambitions that they have broadcast their mission statement boldly across their website:

“We strive to be humbitious – ambitious and humble. Complacency kills innovation, but ambition kills complacency. We humbly seek and accept feedback. We credit the larger team: the families, teammates and players who make it all possible. And we believe there’s always more we can do for players.”
