Ways To Be Sure You Pick The Right Career

By August 2, 2017For Talent

As a wise (and rather corny) man once said, ”Choose a job you love and you’ll never have to work a day in your life.”

Life is just too short to spend 8 hours every day doing something that you aren’t madly passionate about. Here are just a few questions that you should ask yourself to make sure that you pick a career that makes you happy every single day (it is achievable, trust us!).

Will this career satisfy me?

To answer that you need to find out what makes you tick. What are you passionate about? Do you prefer working alone or as part of a team? Do you like working remotely? All these questions will help you to determine what you really want from a career.

What motivates me?

Is it success? Helping others? Or maybe even money? Find out what makes you excited to get out of bed in the morning and make sure your career gives you opportunities to pursue it.

Will I make the money I want?

Like it or not, money is an important consideration when choosing a career but it all comes down to personal preference. Are you happy making less money if it means that you can work more sociable hours? Figure out what is more important to you and adjust accordingly.

Does the company culture appeal to me?

When you start a new job you will also become part of that company’s culture. Ask yourself will you be challenged in this job? Are you excited to be part of this team? Consider whether this is a work environment that can help you grow and reach your full potential.

Am I part of the solution?

When you’re applying for a job, figure out if you can help the company solve a key problem? If you can provide a solution you will become much more valuable.

Is there an opportunity for growth?

Can you see yourself progressing within this career? After a few years (or sometimes months) you may want a new challenge. It’s good to have the possibility of a promotion somewhere down the line.

Will this career still be around in ten years time?

Heck, even five years time. The job industry is constantly changing thanks to new technologies and outsourcing. Do your research and find out which job sectors are growing as this will give you an idea of job security in the years to come.
