How to make self-care part of your work day

By August 21, 2017For Talent

Self-care is extremely important. Not just at home but at work too.

It is about much more than facemasks and pedicures, it’s about taking the time to do activities that nurture you and make you happy.

Today is Internet Self-Care Day so, to celebrate, we’ve come up with a few helpful things you can do online to look after yourself during the 9-5.

Write your to-do list

As soon as you get into the office each morning take five minutes to write down your daily to-do list. Once you have all your tasks laid out in front of you, it will start to seem much more manageable. You can even use handy task apps like Trello or Asana.

Laugh

Laughing has a lot of physiological benefits beyond just improving your mood. You should laugh every day, especially if you want to look after your self-care. Thankfully, there are enough hilarious articles, Twitter feeds, Tumblr pages and cat videos out there to make you snort at your desk. Take a little laughter break or share something funny with your colleagues. Just make sure that it is strictly SFW.

Stop and breathe

When things get a little bit stressful at work, stop and take a few deep breaths. It might sound simple, but it’s an easy way to clear your head and calm down. If you need some help there are lots of apps and websites that you can use to perform guided breathing meditations. Space is a great extension that you can add to your browser which will coach you through different breathing exercises. You can download Space here.

Create your favourite playlist

Music can have a massive effect on your mood and productivity. Build your ultimate work playlist on Spotify and blast it out when you’re trying to work your way through a mammoth task (remember the headphones). Having your favourite songs on standby is a great way to bring a little self-care into your day.

Unplug

Sometimes the best things you can do online is switch off. If you spend most of your day staring at a computer screen it’s important that you take a break. It can be tempting to eat lunch at your desk but you should always give yourself some down time. Go for a quick walk outside, eat lunch in the staffroom, or go get a coffee from your favourite cafe. Anything that will get you away from your computer screen is a good idea.
