5 Things You Need to Do The Night Before a New Job

By August 25, 2017For Talent

Congratulations! Your hard work has paid off and you’ve managed to land your dream job. Now comes the hard part…actually getting started.

Your first day is a nerve-wracking experience but with a bit of preparation you can ditch the jitters and make a great first impression.

Here are our tips for the night before.

Plan your morning commute

Figure out how long it will take you to get from your home to the office…then add 30 minutes. This might sound a bit excessive but first days are hard enough as it is, you don’t need to add more any more pressure by running late. By adding an extra half hour to your commute time you are allowing for a delayed train, crazy traffic or even a wrong turn. It will also create a great first impression for your new employer when you arrive at the office 10 minutes early on your first day. Start as you mean to go on.

Don’t hit the hay too early

Yes, you read that right. You will need a solid night’s sleep before a new job but if you’re used to turning in around 11.30pm don’t suddenly go to bed at 9.30pm instead. If you try to completely change your body clock in one night, you might struggle to switch off and end up staying up later than you normally would. The solution? Stick to your usual night time routine.

Lay out your outfit the night before

Always plan your outfit in advance. If you’re not 100% certain about the company’s dress code always err on the side of caution and wear a smart outfit on your first day. It is better to be overdressed than underdressed. Instead of splurging on a brand new outfit pull out one of your old faithful options instead. There are enough new things to contend with at a new job, your outfit shouldn’t be one of them. It’s much better to be comfortable.

Pack your office essentials the night before

Do you like having a water bottle on your desk? Do you always write down ideas in your notebook? Maybe you’re a big fan of colourful post-its and pens? Think about the things that you like to use while you’re working and pack them in your bag the night before you leave. You’ll feel more at ease knowing that you have them with you if you need them.

Don’t over think it

Don’t get me wrong new jobs are hella scary but no one will expect you to be an absolute pro on your first day, or even in your first month. All you have to do is go into your first week with an open mind and a willingness to learn. Do your prep and don’t sweat the rest. You’ve got this.
