All the reasons you should eat lunch outside today

By August 31, 2017For Talent

Today, 31st August, marks National Eat Lunch Outside Day. Yes folks, there really is a holiday for everything.

But unlike National Jellyfish Day or Root Canal Appreciation Day (yup, they both exist), this is one festivity that we are getting on board with.

Here are just a few reasons that you should take your lunch to the streets .

It will boost your productivity

Eating lunch outside could help you to get more work done today. Research conducted by the University of Sussex found that workers who ate lunch outside were much more productive than those who ate lunch at their desks. So, if you’re busy trying to finish a big project before the weekend then you better dine al fresco this afternoon.

Nature helps you de-stress

Feeling a little bit tense today? Get yourself outside pronto. Studies have shown that spending time outside can decrease your heart rate and even lower your levels of cortisol- a hormone often used as a marker for stress. More time outside= less stress. It’s simple.

You’ll actually get a chance to talk to your coworkers

Eating lunch outside will give you a chance to really get to know your colleagues away from your computer screens and mobile phones.

Talking about families and weekend plans is not only a good way to develop friendships with your colleagues, it also gives you a chance to stop thinking about work.

You’ll enjoy your food more

If you’re eating at your desk then you probably aren’t paying very much attention to what you’re putting in your mouth. Eating outside will allow you to actually enjoy your food and savour the flavours instead of just inhaling it in a rush.  You’re also more likely to stop eating when you’re full.

You should make the most of it

To quote Game of Thrones ”Winter is coming.” The long days and reasonably nice weather will soon disappear. You might as well make the most of this time. You’ll be too cold to even venture outside on your lunch break in a few months.

So, what are you waiting for? Grab a colleague, take your lunch and get outside for a few minutes. You won’t regret it.
