Your Step-by-Step Guide For Finding a Part-Time Job at College

By September 26, 2017For Talent

Having a part-time job at college is a great way to gain invaluable experience, grow your network, and maybe even make a little bit of pocket money on the side.

If you’re trying to get a job this semester then look no further. Here are our top tips for landing the perfect part-time job before Halloween break.

Be proactive

A decent part-time job isn’t going to fall out of the sky and into your lap (if only!). If you want a job then you’re going to have to be proactive. Create your Jobbio profile today. It only takes two minutes so you can even do it in between classes.

Include an engaging bio, education record, and skills. Don’t worry if you don’t have loads of experience, just fill in as much as you can.

Double check everything

And then check again. Once you have finished your bio, make sure that you proof-read it a few times. If you can ask a parent or even a friend to read it that’s even better.

A simple mistake on your application could be the reason that you don’t get an interview. You don’t want to fall at the very first hurdle.

Do your research

If you are invited along for an interview make sure that you research the brand beforehand. You should know all about the company, what their mission is, and who their main competitors are.

If you can talk about these things during your interview then you will really impress the hiring manager. They will want someone who is passionate about the brand so show them that you are.

Dress the part

You don’t need to arrive in a suit but you should be an effort to be presentable. Use the granny test. If your granny wouldn’t approve of an outfit then you should probably change.

Fake it ’til you make it.

Going to your very first interview can be daunting. It’s important that you appear confident, even if you’re panicking on the inside.

Stand up straight, smile, and always shake hands with your interviewer. These little things can make a huge difference. Potential employers are looking for someone who can communicate effectively. If you’re shy and meek they might think that you are not enthusiastic about the job.

Follow-up

This is probably the most important step. Always make a follow-up call or get in touch with the potential employer. I’d usually recommend waiting at least a week before reaching out. This will show the employer that you’re still interested in the role.
