Once you graduate you’re faced with the task of finding your very first ”grown-up job”. Here are just a few of the irrational thoughts that you will probably have along the way.
”Why is everyone always complaining about getting a job? It seems pretty easy.”
I mean all you have to do is apply and wait for the job offers to roll in, right? I’ll have found a job by the end of the week.
”I could totally commute for three hours every day.”
Eh, maybe not. We’ve all been tempted by a job in a different city but if you feasibly cannot move then it might be a good idea to forget about it. Unless they’re willing to let you work remotely of course.
”I am *almost* fluent in French.”
Which means you took one French class a week between the ages of 13 and 16. Don’t try to pad out your language skills on your bio. You will get caught.
”Does the summer I spent travelling count as 2 years experience in a fast-paced sales environment?”
Probably not. One of the hardest things about being a graduate is trying to prove that you’d be great at a job with no track record to confirm it. Don’t worry though, you’ll get there.
”IS THAT A TYPO?”
Nothing will fill you with fear more than the thought of a typo. Oh, the embarrassment.
”Did I delete the drunken Halloween photos from my Facebook?”
Did I? This thought will probably occur to you right before you walk into your interview. You’ll then spend the whole meeting wondering if they’ve seen you dancing in your Oompa Loompa costume.
”I can’t remember any of the important information I have memorised from their website.”
Sometimes nerves can get the better of you at an interview . Hey, it happens, don’t sweat it they might not have even noticed.
”Well, I totally bombed that interview. I am never going to get employed.”
You probably did a lot better than you think. Even if this job opportunity isn’t for you, you’ll have learned a lot in the process. The right graduate job will come along just you wait.
