Everything You Need to do at Work Before the Holidays

By December 21, 2017For Companies, For Talent

Leaving work for the holidays? There are a few things that you need to do before shutting up shop.

So, put down that mince pie, turn down the Christmas music and listen up.

Here’s your ultimate pre-Christmas work checklist.

Contact important clients

Reach out to the most important people in your network. Let them know that you will be out of office and ask them if there’s anything they need before you leave.

This is a great excuse to wish people a Merry Christmas. It’s also a nice way to show people that you are thinking about them at this time of year. Hopefully, they will let you know any issues well in advance so you can leave work with peace of mind.

Prioritise

Establish what tasks you would like to finish before you leave and what projects you can resume in the new year. Write down two to-do lists. One for the last few days before the holidays and another for the first day when you return to work. This will help you to feel more in control of your workload.

Set the boundaries

You need to figure out how much work you would like to do over the holidays. Will you be reachable by email or will you be completely out of touch? Will you feel better if you do 30 minutes of work each day or would you prefer to drop everything until you come back?

Let people know this in advance and they are much more likely to respect your time off. Don’t forget to factor in your family and friends when you’re making this decision. How much work you do over the Christmas holidays will affect them too.

Create an out of office email

Once you have established your work boundaries you can then set up your out of office email. Remember to include the basics like when you will be back at work. If you want to add a little bit of flare then you can check out some of our Christmas out of office templates here.

Clean your workspace

We’re not trying to be an office Grinch but it’s important that you tidy up your workspace before you go home for the holidays. Your colleagues will thank you for it and you will be returning to a much nicer office in January.

Remove any of your food from the fridge, check your drawers for anything that might go off and use this time as an excuse to bring home any bits and bobs that are lying on your desk. Don’t forget to unplug any electronics. You’ll be able to rest easy knowing that everything is taken care off.
