Rediscover Your Work Mojo in 5 Easy Steps

By December 30, 2017For Talent

You need your mojo. It’s the inner confidence, can-do attitude and overall amazing feeling that you get when you’re doing your job and doing it well. It allows you to lead teams, smash targets and completely ace your annual review.

Sometimes a setback or crisis can leave your mojo in tatters just when you need it the most. How do you rediscover it? Start with these simple steps.

1. Mix it up

Edward de Bono once said, ”Creativity involves breaking out of established patterns in order to look at things in a different way.” If you’ve lost your mojo then try mixing up your routine. Do you always eat lunch in the same place? Why not try the middle eastern restaurant one street over? Do you always go to the same gym class after work? Maybe you should try an early morning run.

Make small changes to your everyday life. It could be as simple as sitting at the other side of your desk or eating a different breakfast but it might just provide you with the breakthrough that you need.

2. Sell yourself your job

Are you feeling unmotivated or simply bored in your current role? It could be time to look at things from an outsider’s perspective. On a sheet of paper write down how you would sell your job to an applicant.

Talk about the perks and opportunities that you’re given. Maybe you have excellent work friends or a reasonably easy commute. All these things are easy to forget once you’ve been in a job for a long time. Focus on the positives and things might look a little different.

3. Focus on little wins

Instead of setting huge lifetime goals, try writing down small tasks that you would like to achieve. Break down your goals into monthly, weekly and daily targets.

Each time you complete one give yourself a pat on the back and allow yourself to feel satisfaction for what you’ve accomplished.

4. Find your balance

Your mojo is at its strongest when you are living a balanced life. When you eat unhealthy foods you will feel lethargic and unproductive. Try to eat a well-balanced diet and exercise regularly. This will boost your serotonin and dopamine levels.

You need to find balance at work too. Don’t overwork yourself. If you haven’t ticked everything off your to-do list at the end of the day just go home. Staying late will only make you frustrated and resentful. Remember you need some downtime.

5. Show up

80% of success is just showing up. No matter how you feel each morning get up and do your best to throw yourself into your workday. You can’t find your work mojo hiding under the covers at home.

Put on your favourite outfit, leave the house on time and do your work. You won’t break out of your rut if you allow yourself to wallow in it.
