How to Avoid the Post-Christmas Blues

The advent calendars are empty, the presents have been put away and the office Christmas tree is starting to look just a little bit sad.

I think it is safe to say that the party season is officially over. But that doesn’t mean it’s all downhill from here.

If the thought of returning to work is making you feel gloomy then read our tips below for beating those post-Christmas blues. Who says January has to be a dreary month?

Book some annual leave

It’s always nice to have something to look forward to. If you need a little pick-me-up then why not book a holiday or maybe even a mini-break? Having something to look forward to can take your mind off those cold dark winter nights.

Research conducted by Booking.com found that three-quarters of people (77%) book a holiday to cheer themselves up when they’re in need of a happiness boost. This is because the anticipation of a holiday can make you feel excited by releasing endorphins, your bodies’ natural feel-good hormones.

Escape the office 

Post-Christmas blues are made worse due to the lack of daylight. We start work in the dark and then finish in the dark. Try to counteract this by going for a short walk every day at lunchtime. Daylight instantly lifts your mood (even if it’s cloudy). Just don’t forget to bring your jacket.

Reach out

January can feel like a very lonely time, especially after all the hustle and bustle of Christmas. It’s important that you do not isolate yourself. Instead, you should try to connect with others.

Reach out to a former colleague, or offer to take an old friend out for coffee. Make a conscious effort to spend more time with the people that you enjoy.  Just because big nights out in the pub are off the table that doesn’t mean that you can’t socialise.

Eat your breakfast

Most people start the new year with a mission to get fit and healthy. That shouldn’t involve cutting meals or starving yourself. Research has shown that low blood sugars can have a negative effect on your mood. Remember to always eat breakfast before work. Something filling and hearty like a bowl of porridge will usually do the trick.

Get organised

Have you ever had one of those days when everything goes wrong? It usually starts when you wake up late. Next, you realise that your top has a stain on it. Then there’s no milk in the fridge and to top everything off you get stuck behind every single red light on your way to work. The result? You arrive at work in a terrible mood before you’ve even started your day. The moral of the story? Try to organise as much as you can the night before. You don’t want one mistake to cause a domino effect that will ruin your whole day.
