Bad Habits That Can Get You Fired (And How to Avoid Them)

By January 4, 2018For Talent

You might think that showing up for work and getting your job done is enough to make sure that you don’t get fired but think again.

Competition for jobs is more fierce than ever, if you want to earn the appreciation of your boss and coworkers then you need to make sure that you conduct yourself in the best way possible.

Here are just five bad habits that might lead to you getting the sack.

Oversharing online

Listen, we know you’re not silly. You know that you shouldn’t put up drunken holiday snaps on LinkedIn or share pictures from your sister’s hen party in the office Slack channel. That stuff is pretty basic.

But just because you protect personal photos of your free time does not mean that you are off the hook. Even a passing social media mention of something going on at work can put your job at risk.

Never talk about clients online, engage in office politics or speak ill of your company. You never know when a comment might come back to haunt you. Nip these bad habits in the bud today.

 Slacking off
Do you enjoy watching the occasional YouTube video during work time or perhaps doing a spot of online shopping? Yes, we all need a little break every now and then but extensive slacking off will lead to one thing and one thing only, getting fired.

Remember you’re hired to do your job, not find online bargains or beat your highest score on Candy Crush. If you fail to meet the standards that have been outlined then you will be let go, it is as simple as that.

Negativity
Moaning at work is a terrible habit. It’s perfectly acceptable to complain when something isn’t right but if you’re constantly whining about your lack of sleep, the weather or even your workload then you can quickly become a headache for your manager and the rest of your team.

Your boss want’s to promote a positive staff morale. If you are not adding to this then you may be asked to leave. If you have a problem talk to your manager in private first. Do not air your grievances to the team as a whole. No one likes a negative Nelly.

Tardiness
Are you constantly late for work? Do you sometimes take ten minutes extra at lunchtime? Tardiness is an awful habit that bosses and other members of staff hate equally. Being late shows a level of complacency and carelessness which can be frustrating when there is a lot of work to be done.

Always aim to be on time or even a few minutes early. This will show your team that you are dedicated to your role and willing to make an effort.

Bad manners
Good manners cost you nothing and can get you pretty far in life but bad manners on the other hand, well, they could cost you your job.

When you’re at work remember the basics of good manners. Say ”please” and ”thank you”, hold the door open for your colleagues, make office small talk and always be willing to help others. Don’t pry into other people’s business and never be rude.
