Who wouldn’t want to be happier? The idea of happiness has almost become an elusive fantasy over the last few years. Something reserved for the chai-latte, yoga pant wearing, zen meditators of the world. I am not one of those people.

Which is probably why I was drawn to Rubin’s podcast. I consider myself happy. But I’ve begun to realise that happiness isn’t something that just happens. It’s something that you control. And that’s exactly what Rubin’s podcast is all about.

The happiness specialist and author uses her years of experience to explain the factors that make us content.

Writer Sarah Larson explains it perfectly when she states, “Their voices remind you that life is a human project that we’re all experimenting with.”

Rubin and her sister Elizabeth Craft give listeners simple and effective tips for how they can bring a little bit more happiness into their lives every day.

Their advice isn’t groundbreaking. It includes easy things like throwing out old clothes that you no longer wear and always saying ”goodbye” and ”hello” in a cheerful manner.

While their tips usually aren’t revolutionary. It is important to remind ourselves of these little daily habits.

However, some of their advice like organising a kissing schedule (episode 156) or keeping a running list of your favourite things (episode 151) were a little too Julie Andrews-esque for my taste.

The podcast certainly does seem to be popular. Happier has won a whole slew of awards. It was named in iTunes’s list of ”Best Podcasts of 2015,” the Academy of Podcasters’ “Best Podcasts of 2016,” and is consistently ranked in the Apple podcast charts.

Happier has been running since February 2015, a remarkable feat for any podcast. If you do decide to jump on the bandwagon you will have 157 episodes to choose from. If you need a hand here are my three favourites:

1. Episode 44: Drew Barrymore Gets Personal. And Happier

This episode contains Drew Barrymore, do I even need to say anymore? It’s a lovely personal chat with the star that allows you to see her in a new light.

2.Episode 110: A Very Special Episode on a Major Happiness Stumbling Block- Are You Lonely?

Who hasn’t felt lonely every once in a while? This frank podcast will make you feel, well, less alone.

3. Episode 154: Wear ”Clothes” Every Day and an Interview about Resilience with Tanya Coke

In this episode, Rubin interviews Tanya Coke a defense attorney and lecturer about how she made it through a particularly rough period in her life. Without giving too much away Coke has some great practical advice that anyone can benefit from.
