The way we work has changed forever. Automation, advances in technology and a greater focus on work-life balance means that the offices of today are nothing like their predecessors.

All you need to do is watch a rerun of an old ’90s sitcom like Friends or Seinfeld to realise just how out of place those giant mobile phones and clunky PCs are compared to sleek iPhones and digital assistants.

It’s not just the equipment that has changed. How we work has also evolved. Long gone are the days when you would enter a job at 21, work for the same company for 30-40 years before slipping quietly into retirement. Career paths are no longer linear and more and more people are shunning the idea of working 9-5. Your boss can now reach you 24 hours a day and the line between work life and home life has never been more blurry.

How do we navigate this new working world? Well, that’s the question that Alexandra Cavoulacos and Kathryn Minshew set out to answer in their book The New Rules of Work.

If those names ring a bell then you’ve probably heard of a little website called The Muse. The duo set up the platform back in 2011. Obviously, they know what they’re talking about when it comes to careers and business.

Through quick exercises and tips, the authors help the reader to figure out their best assets and what makes them stand out from the crowd.

Topics covered in The New Rules of Work include landing the best job, finding the right path and creating excitement in the everyday.

This book succeeds where other self-help career books have failed. Instead of tailoring their advice to the old way of working they have created a modern and accessible read that is relevant to today’s workplace. A workplace where people search for jobs based on their passions, where career paths are often zigzagged and where emerging technologies are creating new positions every single day.

Whether you’re starting out in your career or you just want some much-needed advice I would definitely recommend giving this book a read.
