Success is about more than securing funding or getting a write up in Forbes. These days, if a company really wants to capture the attention of both their customers and potential employees then they need to stand out from the crowd and have a mission that appeals to the masses.
We decided to take a look at some of the amazing San Francisco tech companies driving social change (and making a name for themselves in the process).

BetterUp
Do you need a helping hand dealing with office politics or navigating your next career move? That’s where BetterUp comes in. BetterUp is the first online platform that connects ”personalized, expert coaching to organization-level insights and outcomes.”
Employees are paired with a coach for weekly audio or video sessions. Companies are also given analytics to measure employee progress. Alexi Robichaux, Co-Founder and CEO believes that the company’s mission is to ”help professionals gain greater purpose, clarity and passion”. We can definitely get on board with that.
Story Bikes
Environmental startups are on the rise. One company that has really captured attention is Story Bikes. Story Bikes make and sell stylish electric bikes that can travel 45 miles on a single charge. Sounds pretty good so far right? But that’s not all they do. For every Story Bike sold, a specially designed Buffalo Bicycle will be given to a student, healthcare worker or entrepreneur in rural Africa, through their partnership with World Bicycle Relief.
Literator
When second-grade teacher Xiaohoa Michelle Ching wanted to find a better way to meet the needs of her students she didn’t sit back and wait for someone else to come up with an idea. Instead, she joined forces with Jing an Apple designer and Jeff a successful startup veteran to build a platform.
Literator allows teachers to group students together by skills, set individual goals, track progress and share these results with parents. According to the company’s website, their focus is on ”advancing equity in education.”
Envoy
Envoy is the app that is disrupting the car rental industry. Similar to Airbnb, Envoy is a closed car-sharing platform. Certain vehicles are appointed to specific locations. Users don’t even need a key to access them. Everything can be done through their app. While the tech is impressive, their sustainability promise is also a great selling point. Every single car in their fleet is electric which greatly reduces emissions.
Nuna
Healthcare is a big business, especially in the States. One company that is hoping to revolutionise the system is Nuna. Nuna is a healthcare technology company that builds data solutions for payers and providers to measure and improve the cost and quality. Their mission is to make great healthcare affordable to everyone. Who wouldn’t want that?
