The Secret to Getting a Top Startup Job

By August 13, 2018For Talent

Are you tired of the same old boring 9-5? Maybe you want to take your chances and work for a company that you truly believe in?

If you want to join the exciting world of startups then you have come to the right place. In this blog post, we outline the secret to getting your dream startup job.

*Hint* It’s probably a lot easier than you think.

Get comfortable with the culture

The company’s culture is going to affect how you prepare for your interview and whether you even want to apply in the first place. Check out the company’s website for some culture clues. Are the employees dressed in suits or jeans? Is there a beer tap in the office or is there a corporate vibe?

If you can’t find any good information on the company’s official website check out their social media pages, Glassdoor reviews and of course their Jobbio channel.

Network, network, network

As the old saying goes, it’s all about who you know. If you want to bag your dream startup gig then you need to start making connections and fast. But where do you start?

Industry events are usually a great place to begin. The WeWork Creator Awards are a great example. The award show/hiring fair takes place at various locations around the world. The next event is on September 13th in Nashville, Tennesse and will give attendees the perfect opportunity to mingle with potential employers and network with people in their industry.

Don’t be too cool for cold calls

Listen, no one likes emailing or calling up someone they don’t know. It’s cringy and a little bit awkward. But if you want to land your perfect job you’re going to have to put on your big boy/girl pants and reach out to someone within the company.

There is an art to writing the perfect cold email. Don’t write a novel but give the reader just enough information to be intrigued. Mention something that you like or even dislike about their company. Give them tips on how they can improve their website. Do something to stand out.

If you don’t ask…

You won’t get. Startups are not like stuffy corporate businesses. They don’t necessarily have set processes and positions in place. Chances are you will probably spend time defining your potential role during the interview phase. This is your time to ask for exactly what you want. Part of the joy of working at a startup is being able to work hard and quickly move up the ranks to your dream position. Don’t be afraid to craft your perfect job, just make sure that you are willing to do the work to back it up.
