How Blogging Changed the World

By November 13, 2018For Companies, For Talent

Way back in 1994, US freelance journalist Justin Hall published his first online blog. Realistically it was a just a collection of links but Hall started a trend that would completely change the world in the 21st century.

Today, millions of blogs exist. In fact, statistics suggest that the average internet user reads about 10 blogs per day and spends nearly a quarter of their internet time on blogs and social media.

Here are just some of the ways that blogging has developed.

Advertising

Blogging has changed the way that companies advertise goods and services. For example, 61% of US online consumers have made a purchase based on a recommendation from a blog. This has lead to a drastic rise in advertorials and so-called sponsored posts, a far cry from traditional marketing.

Employment

Blogs can be monetised if they have enough followers. Today, many bloggers work on their brand full time and are able to make a comfortable living through ads and promotions. This development has lead to a whole new career field and skillset. Oxford University now even offers blogging courses.

More accessibility

Blogging websites such as WordPress have made the web a much more open and accessible place. Today, anyone with an internet connection can create and promote their very own website. You no longer need a dedicated web designer or developer to get your idea off the ground (although they will come in handy in the later stages).

Building connections

Blogs allow people to express themselves in lots of different ways whether that’s professionally, artistically or even politically. They have become a great way for people in isolated areas of the world to connect with others who have similar interests and passions. Online connections can often lead to offline friends and business acquaintances.

Creating industry experts

Yes, blogging is a great way to network but it is also a fantastic way to build up your reputation as an industry expert. No matter what field you’re in, marketing, tech, or even HR having a blog where you can share your insight and relevant industry news is a great addition to your online portfolio.
