How GPS Changed the World (and Business) Forever

The first satellite in the modern Navstar Global Positioning System (GPS) was launched back in 1987. Since then it has made a huge impact on our society.

It has changed the way people communicate and do business. GPS has made our environment a safer place to live and given us the tools to make everyday tasks easier.

Here are just some of the things that wouldn’t be possible without the technology.

Business logistics

If you’ve ever ordered a taxi or package online you will know how important GPS systems are. They help companies to direct drivers on safe routes and allow fleet managers to track the habits of their drivers to see how each person drives i.e. if they follow traffic laws and if the cargo is transported safely.

Fitness

Many running watches and apps use GPS data to show how far an athlete has run, how many calories they have burnt and what the terrain was like. This has changed the exercise industry completely and no doubt new technologies will continue to develop in the future.

Real-time data

GPS sensors can be placed on objects in order to track them. This has a variety of uses from scientific exploration to finding missing persons. It has also been widely used in sport. For example, the horse racing industry uses sensors to deliver real-time data during games. This helps to inform commentary.

Navigation

Have you ever used a little something called Google Maps? It might be hard to imagine now but there was a time not so long ago when we all depended on trusty maps and handwritten directions to get to where we wanted to go. Plus you can now easily search for the nearest restaurant, petrol station or hotel with just a few clicks.

Anti-theft

GPS has improved our safety. Thanks to the technology it is now much easier to track a stolen mobile phone, car or laptop than ever before. The gadgets send signals that can help the owner to pinpoint the exact location of a stolen item. The military and police can also use GPS to track down criminals
