How I Got My Job As a Matchmaker

By January 18, 2019For Talent

With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, we decided to ask Matchmaker Sharon Kenny about her career and thriving business TheMatchmaker.ie.

What did you want to be when you were younger?

The matchmaker. My Granny from Westmeath was forever matchmaking her 7 kids off the back of the Farmers Journal and through her contacts.

I didn’t take it seriously as a career until I was 40. I felt I needed to give advice too and needed more experience. At 51 I definitely have plenty of experience.

Talk us through your career to date.

I studied Fine Art at college but there was too much solitude in that career. I specialised in china restoration. Along the way, I did marketing to help me with it.
Later I came up with an idea called Brandmat which was advertising on beermats. My ex gave up his job and worked with me. The marriage broke down so I took the bull by the horns and followed my dreams.

What skills do you need to become a matchmaker?

You need to love people, stories and marketing.  I’m empathetic, caring, confident, compassionate and positive. I think on my feet and can be tough too. People need to know I’m there to look after them through their journey.

I did a USA matchmaking course. I just followed my gut re getting matches right. It’s second nature to me. I can even guess people’s age, personality and confidence level over the phone. This is the job for me!

Is it a gift or something you can learn?

It’s a gift. You can learn it too but I feel you should follow your talents.

Are people sceptical about your career?

Everyone is interested and some are sceptical. After they meet me, they learn to trust me. The ones who trust find love first. It’s the law of attraction.

What are the best and worst parts of your job?

The worst is seeing how negative and hurt people have become through bad relationships. The best part is helping them to become the best they can be.

What is the biggest misconception people have about your job?

It is easy or it is only matchmaking. I’m like their big sister. I’m here to give advice and help them through dates and relationships.

What is a typical day like?

I spend my morning matchmaking. In the afternoon I have meetings. In the evening I will often have a conference to attend.

How do you get a good work-life balance?

I can head out for a walk anytime. I have great family support. I eat well, play hard and chill too.

What has been the biggest career lesson you have learned to date?

Never give up. Go that extra mile. Step outside your comfort zone and follow your gut. Don’t be afraid to try something new.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to become a matchmaker?

Make sure you are the best you can be before you start working on others. Remember you are dealing with peoples emotions. Be very kind.
