8 Things You Should do After Work if You Want to be Happier

By February 4, 2019For Talent

When you leave work after a long and tiring day it’s tempting to get a quick microwave meal, throw on your pyjamas and slump on the sofa for the entire evening.

While a good Netflix binge is necessary every now and then, this routine can lead to unhealthy patterns that will eventually affect your wellbeing.

If you want to boost your productivity, energy and happiness then you should try out some of these healthy after work activities instead. They’re easy to implement and you will be reaping the benefits for months to come.

Cook up a storm

You’re probably pretty hungry after a long day at the office. But instead of grabbing a takeaway on your way home why not stop off at your local grocery shop instead? Research from John Hopkins University has found that people who frequently cook at home are healthier than those who don’t.

Ditch the commute

Walking, cycling or running home is a great way to unwind after a long and stressful day. The positive endorphins will boost your mood and you’ll quickly see your fitness improve in just a couple of weeks. It’s a no-brainer.

Write

Write an email to an old friend, scribble a thank you card or simply jot down your thoughts. You don’t have to write the next New York Times bestseller, the simple act of writing anything will help you to unwind. If you’re finding it difficult, start by writing down some of the things that you are grateful for.

Set a night-time alarm

Sleep is a key component of a healthy and happy lifestyle. To make sure that you get enough zzzs, start setting a night-time alarm. This alarm should go off about an hour before you want to be asleep to give you enough time to put down your phone and get ready for bed.

Clean

You know what they say, a tidy home helps create a tidy mind. Channel your inner Marie Kondo and give your home a quick clean. If housework isn’t really your thing then just take one room at a time. You don’t need to do it all in one night.

Listen to a podcast

Listening to a podcast is a great way to chill out without technology. Sure you have to press play but after that, you can completely zone out. Bonus points if you go for a walk while you listen. Here are some of our favourites.

Call someone you love

It can be anyone, an old friend, a sibling or another family member. Research has shown that speaking to people that we care about makes us happier. Make time for the important people today.

Plan for tomorrow

Mornings are tough, especially in winter. An easy way to make them go a little smoother is to plan your outfit the night before. Leave everything that you will need in the morning within reach. This will allow you to lie in for an extra five minutes.
