New year, change of career?
If you’re struggling to get settled at work after Christmas then it might be time to start asking yourself the hard questions.
Is it just the January Blues or is it time to make a change? Here are six reasons to transform your career in 2021.
1. You’re completely bored
If the thought of going to work fills you with dread, something isn’t right. Perhaps you were excited about your workload and projects once upon a time but that passion has now waned.
If you find yourself daydreaming about something completely different at work or you feel like your talents are going to waste then it might be time to make a change.
2. You want a better work-life balance
Are you constantly living for the weekends? Do you spend every waking hour thinking about work? 2021 should be the year that you put yourself first. Life is simply too short to stay in a job that is making you feel stressed and exhausted. Change your career for the sake of your health.
3. Your life has changed
If you went through a lot of changes in 2020 (didn’t we all?) now might be the perfect time to reassess your career. You might have started a family and want more free time. Maybe you’ve decided that you want to travel more (once we can) or perhaps you want the challenge of learning a new skill.
Decide exactly what you want and choose a new career that aligns with those goals.
4. You want more cash
Sometimes the career you wanted five or ten years ago isn’t as financially beneficial as you had hoped. Listen, it’s okay to say you want more money. It isn’t the most important thing in the world but it is necessary.
If you want a steep wage increase fast then it might be time to change careers. However, you should remember that there is always a payoff. Higher wages will mean more responsibility and perhaps a greater workload.
4. Your talents don’t match your current role
Have you got an artistic flair but you’re stuck in a finance role? Maybe you enjoy meeting new people but you work in an unsociable environment. If your talents and skills don’t match your current career, it might be time to make a change. Take some aptitude tests to find out what career would suit you best.
6. The outlook for your sector isn’t great
Hey, it happens. Maybe your field was booming a few years ago but now due to technological advances and changes in the economy things aren’t looking so bright. If you find yourself in this position it is probably a good idea to change career.
Research emerging markets and investigate what industries employ people in the jobs that interest you. Find out what you need to do to become qualified and take it from there.
