How companies can benefit when employees work remotely

Turns out letting employees work remotely can be a massive benefit to a business.

At the moment, we’re living in very unusual times. The outbreak of Coronavirus has resulted in massive changes to the way we work. Many talented people have lost their jobs as a result of the pandemic, and many others are working from home.

If you are lucky enough to be able to do your job from home, then there may be a silver lining in all of this.

According to research by Prithwiraj Choudhury, working from home can have many advantages for a business, and can boost companies, employees, and even the economy. Now we know that right now, this all seems highly unlikely, it is worth noting the benefits to allowing employees to work from home.

Prithwiraj Choudhury, an associate professor in the Technology and Operations Management Unit at Harvard Business School, compared the outcomes of flexible work arrangements, and the findings were very interesting.

He found that employees with remote working arrangements, were 4.4 percent more productive than those following a more traditional “work-from-home” policy that gives schedule flexibility but requires workers to live near the office.

So basically, the concept of “working from anywhere” was found to be better than a simple “work from home” model. Interesting, right?

Speaking about the findings, Professor Choudhury said:

“While prior academic research has studied productivity effects of ‘working from home’ that gives workers temporal flexibility, ‘work from anywhere’ goes a step further and provides both temporal and geographic flexibility.”

The findings of this study can help companies to understand the effects of various flex-work options, and support certain types of employees as they negotiate with employers.

Professor Choudhury says the results have important implications for workers, who could potentially move to lower-cost areas, reduce commuting costs, and live closer to family and friends.

If you are in the market for a new job, and fancy something that you can do remotely, you’re in luck. Right now on Jobbio, we have loads of brilliant jobs that let employees work remotely. Check them out here
