A Day In The Life of Glen Hughes, Fundraiser At Concern

What do you do, and how did you get here?

I started as an on-street fundraiser in August 2016. Before this I worked in retail, I wanted a change so I applied for the job. I got two days training before being on the street so didn’t feel as nervous as I thought I would. Having great team leaders at the start really helped because they give you constant motivation and guidance. I quickly grew to love the job. I loved that no day was ever the same, I was meeting people from all different walks of life while making a difference to Concern’s overseas work.

After 8 months I was promoted to Team Leader. I love the extra responsibility and that I can see career progression while doing a job I love.

How do you spend your day?
We all meet in the office at 9am to plan the day ahead. We meet the team at 10am in the office or on site and always start off with a team talk. Communication and a fun team atmosphere are the most important aspects of this role so I need to make sure these are always present throughout the day. We split the day up by taking two half an hour breaks in the morning and afternoon.

What’s the best part of your job?

I love the team dynamic. We are all friends and get on really well. I never dread coming into work because the team we have here is great craic!

What’s the hardest part of your job?

Being resilient. We hear a lot of rejection throughout the day so its really important to be able to keep yourself motivated. There are always people who want to talk to us and it’s about not giving up until we meet those people.

Join the Concern team.

What traits are ‘must haves’ to do your job well?
Be energetic, able to chat to anyone, resilient, positive but most importantly be able to work as part of a team.

Any advice for people applying for a job like yours?

In this job, your personality is your strength so don’t be afraid to show it off!

What’s your ultimate goal in your career?
Ultimately I want to visit the places Concern is working in so I can see first hand the difference our work is doing! That’s 28 countries so I have plenty to pick from!

How do you unwind after work?
I walk through town, listening to music to chill out from the day. Sometimes on Friday, we have a few pints which adds to the team environment.

Tell us one quirky thing nobody would know about you.
I’m secretly a big One Direction fan!!

Think you’d make a good addition to the Concern team? Apply today.
