How to Quit Playing it Safe: Advice From a Confidence Coach

By June 7, 2018For Talent

Have you ever considered how we tend to settle for the comfortable and familiar? Just like that favourite old T-shirt you keep digging out of a pile of twenty.

Similarly, your steady relationships, friendships and career create the natural rhythm that fills your daily waking hours.

But are these elements of your life ticking all the boxes? Is there something else worth pursuing?

Lack of drive, motivation or self-confidence can throttle the best of us. Do you think you could be playing it too safe? Do you want to head down the road less travelled?

Ask yourself these fire starter questions

“How will I know what I’m capable of if I don’t push the boundaries a bit?”

Never limit yourself to what’s in your immediate grasp. Think outside of the box. Remember the proverb, “A journey of a thousand miles starts with the first step.“ Take it!

“Will I really be happy doing the same thing in the same place with the same people next year, or 5 years down the line?”

Embrace the possibility of change. Nothing in life stays the same and that includes you.

“What’s lying on the other side of my resistance?”

Personal growth is a gift you owe yourself throughout life. Imagine how things could look if you decided to act on that deep-seated urge?

“What am I missing out on?”

Just picture all the crazy, positive, life-enhancing things you could be enjoying as a result of stepping forwards?

“Am I doubting myself or allowing something to hold me back?”

Our fears are the true enemy within. Be aware of that little voice that constantly tries to restrain you.

“Am I forgetting all the great new connections my actions will bring?”

Good ol’ Dr. Seuss hit the nail right on the head when he said, “Oh! The places you’ll go! The people you’ll meet!”. Just imagine who and what’s out there waiting for you? Exciting, right?

Takeaway Time

If you do only one thing for yourself today, change your perspective on what’s possible.

  • Believe in yourself.
  • Dive right in.
  • Stop waiting until the time is right (it never will be).
  • Quit waiting until you feel ready and fully prepared (you never will be).

Whatever life has in store for you, remember that it’s always going to unfold as it should do.

Now‘s the time to get out there and discover all the possibilities waiting for you. So kick free of that self-imposed safety net.

What is it that you really want?
