Are you currently hiring on your growth marketing team?

So, last week I went through the most important skill sets to have on a growth marketing team. I highlighted some of the most valued skills that make up a brilliant growth hacking team, which included Analytical skills, UX skills, Acquisition skills, Technical skills and A/B testing skills.

So say, as a hiring manager, you have identified a pool of people that tick the above boxes. What next? The interview process.

If you are prepping to interview people for a growth marketing position, then there are certain questions you should always try to ask. A growth hacker will be someone who has strong technical skills, but also a solid understanding of marketing, social media and statistics.

The perfect package is out there, you just have to know what to ask…

What is your experience with A/B testing?

As mentioned in a previous article, there are certain skills to look out for when hiring for a growth marketing position. One of the main ones being experience with A/B testing. A/B testing is the process of comparing two versions of a web page, email, or other marketing asset and measuring the difference in performance. Experience with this kind of testing is crucial to achieving strong results as a team.

Do you have strong analytical skills?

A huge part of growth hacking is analytics, so this question is crucial. Strong analytical skills will allow growth marketers to gain valuable insight into their users, and ultimately, to promote business growth. Which is of course the end goal, right?

What kind of experience do you have with paid social?

We’re talking Facebook and Instagram here people. A knowledge on how to drive traffic on social is key to spotting trends in data. Look for someone with experience in bidding strategies, device targeting, location targeting, naming campaigns, working with “Lookalike audiences”, and custom audiences.

How would you define growth hacking to your grandmother?

I love this question! Someone working on a growth marketing team will come into contact with various different stakeholders, from journalists and PRs to developers and analysts. We should not assume these people all know what growth hacking is. An ability to explain something that is fairly complex to a person that has no idea what it is… that is an incredible skill.

What would you tell a client if you weren’t hitting KPIs?

Managing disappointment is something that not everybody handles well. Listen, sometimes things are slow to get off the ground, or simply don’t go as planned. These things happen, even when a person is an experienced growth professional. How a person handles this disappointment is key. This question will shine a light on a person’s communication, sales and negotiation skills.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

While all the various technical and analytical skills are key to hiring the right growth hacker, you want to get a sense of the person too. Asking a person where they see themselves in a few years is a great way to assess their focus, passion and ambition. You want to ensure that the person you’re hiring has plans to improve, and innovate in the years to come!
