Women Who Wear Makeup to Work are Getting Paid More

By June 20, 2018For Talent

Roll up, roll up! We’ve got some great news for all the women out there.

If you want to get paid the wages that you deserve forget about showing up to work on time, working your ass off and sucking up to your boss. All you need to do is put on a bit of mascara and maybe some lippy.

Okay, I can practically hear you rolling your eyes from here. But unfortunately, the statement above holds some weight.

A new study has found that women are paid significantly more money if they are well-groomed.

Sociologists Jaclyn Wong and Andrew Penner collected data from more than 14,000 employees and found that there is a link between income and effort-based attractiveness.

In the past studies have shown that attractive men and women earn as much as 20% more than their less attractive colleagues.

However, this study shows that the perceived attractiveness of women, unlike men was based entirely on how well-groomed she was. No surprise there.

It’s ridiculous that people are still being judged on their appearance at work instead of their ability.

While someone working at a high-end fashion magazine may have to dress up in order to represent the brand to clients, surely the average woman in an office doesn’t need to come in with a perfect curly blow-dry and manicured nails every day?

On the other hand. Is having a neat and tidy appearance part of every job? After all, since primary school, we have been encouraged to keep our hair neat and our clothes clean. Is it simply good manners?

Perhaps. But when the same rules do not apply to men then it is time to start asking the hard questions.
